Climbing Mt Sinai

When we arrived at Mt. Sinai, we first gathered in the chapel at the base of the mountain and celebrated the Lord’s Supper together. As people gathered for worship at Heartland Community Church as well as many other churches in the US and Canada, we embarked on our journey up Mt. Sinai to watch the sunset (Egypt is 8 hours later than CST). We rode camels for about an hour as we ascended the mountain and then had to finish the climb with 750 steps to the summit. After the sun set we walked the same path down the mountain in the dark.

The path was steep and rocky. We’ve climbed Harney Peak in the Black Hills (the highest point in the US east of the Rockies) and in comparison this was steeper and more rugged. Unfortunately it was hazy so the sunset was not spectacular. The walk down with 30 some people using flashlights to find the path was also challenging. The people ahead of us “lost” the guide, and got off the path. After moving forward (in the right direction but not on the path) Jim was able to find the path for the group. We were thankful! It took about 2.5 hours to walk down the mountain, so we didn’t get supper until 10:30 pm. We were tired and food was cold, so it was not our best meal!
